artist tuesday: henri de toulouse-lautrec

Oh surprise.  I’m back to the French.  BUT this guy is just a little bit different from a couple others I’ve posted on before. Toulouse-Lautrec is probably recognizable to most people.  His “Moulin Rouge” poster has graced many a wall, including mine.  Toulouse-Lautrec is a true bohemian and is famous for his many paintings displaying the de-glamorized  Parisian nightlife *cough*brothels*cough* and behind-the-scenes sketches of cabarets. A genetic condition and two broken legs stunted his growth from an early age, which unfortunately led him to be ridiculed and teased by many, a trauma he numbed with alcohol throughout his life.  Pretty sad really.  I kind just want to give him a hug and tell him it’s ok that he’s short.  Regardless, Toulouse-Lautrec continued to paint and draw, a talent that has afforded him much praise (and reprinted posters) over the last 100 years.

"Moulin Rouge"..... look familiar?

Also, here’s a little fun fact for you, did you know that the actor (John Leguizamo) who plays Toulouse-Lautrec in the movie Moulin Rouge! is also the voice of Sid the Sloth from Ice Age? Betcha didn’t know that, eh?
